The Drama of Ideas in Crisis: Political Theatre from Ibsen to Tom Stoppard

Abstract

This article traces the lineage of the “drama of ideas” from Henrik Ibsen to Tom Stoppard, arguing that political theatre, as practised by these playwrights, constitutes an epistemological practice—a mode of dramatic enquiry that uses the stage to test, validate, and contest the conditions under which political knowledge becomes thinkable, sayable, and actionable. The study argues that both playwrights deploy the stage as a philosophical forum in which the tensions between individual conscience and collective authority, intellectual freedom and political conformity, and historical memory and institutional forgetting are dramatised with uncommon rigour. Whereas ideological critique sets out to unmask the hidden interests that underwrite a given political order, and discourse foregrounds the staging of debate so as to provoke rational deliberation, the article focuses on how political truths are constructed, authorised, circulated, and weaponised within the institutions of liberal modernity. Through close textual analysis and sustained engagement with secondary scholarship, the study demonstrates that Ibsen’s realist excavation of bourgeois hypocrisy and Stoppard's metatheatrical interrogation of ideological systems constitute complementary responses to the recurring crisis of liberalism. The article further contends that the formal innovations of both playwrights — Ibsen's retrospective analytical method and Stoppard's layered intertextuality — are inseparable from their political commitments. By reading these two bodies of work in dialogue, the study contributes to an understanding of political theatre not as didactic polemic but as a sophisticated epistemological practice that stages the very conditions under which ideas acquire or lose their authority.
